North Vietnam

Hanoi

The bustling, motorbike strewn capital of Vietnam, Hanoi is an exotic mixture of pleasures. From modern upscale restaurants to reminders of its historic colonial past, the capital city of Vietnam is a hive for tourists. Hanoi comes alive early with city dwellers practicing Tai Chi at dawn and the smells of freshly baked produce emanating from street corner cafes.

 

Hoi An

 

One of the essential must do's for any tourist looking at their maps of Vietnam. A tourist city, Hoi An escaped the destruction of the American forces and is now laden with hotels, restaurants, souvenir shops and – tailors, up to 500 of them.

 

Cuc Phuong National Park

Given national park status in 1963, Cuc Phuong spans the provinces of  Ninh Binh and Hoa Binh. Although in decline in recent years the park still has an incredible variety of wildlife. There are 320 species of bird, 97 species of mammal including bats, 36 species of reptile and 2000 plant species.

 

Dong Ha

Dong Ha suffered major destruction at the hands of the Americans. However, the city has been rebuilt and is a good stop off on the journey from Hanoi to Hue. Visit one of its lengthy stretches of beaches for a bit of relaxation.

 

South Vietnam

Nha Trang

Nha Trang is a fames beach resort with international restaurants, hotels, bars and tourist shops. Aside from lounging on the beach, there is much to do here including island-hopping boat trips, scuba diving, mudbaths and visits to historic sites.

 

Mekong Delta

Get out the Mekong Delta map and discover the sleepy towns of the area. The Delta yields enough rice to feed the country and is full of watery green landscapes. The delta plains also produce sugarcane, fruit, coconut and shrimp.
